Abstract
544,651. Ketals. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., .E. 1., and MOCHEL, W. E. Oct. 18, 1940, No. 15427. [Class 2 (iii)] Ketals are formed by reacting a mercaptol with an alcohol in the presence of an acid interchange catalyst. The mercaptol is prepared for instance by reacting a ketone with a mercaptan. In examples, 2-2 bis-(ethylthio) butane the mercaptol made from methyl-ethyl ketone and ethyl mercaptan, is reacted with methyl alcohol and the mercaptol from methylethyl ketone and cyclohexane thiol is re-acted with methyl alcohol. Suitable catalysts are hydrochloric, p-toluene sulphonic, acids of sulphur, phosphorus and chlorine, boron trifluoride and its complexes, strong organic acids such as aromatic and aliphatic sulphonic acids, and chloracetic acid, acid-acting salts such as tin and aluminium chlorides, and heteropoly acids containing an oxide of phosphorus, silicon, boron or arsenic together with other groups such as oxides of tungsten, vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, tellurium and sulphur. An unsaturated ether such as 2-methoxy-butene-1 may appear as a byproduct, formed by loss of a molecule of alcohol from the ketal. This reaction can be effected by heating the ketal with an acid catalyst, the reaction being reversible.
