Abstract
544,355. Electro-static precipitating apparatus. LODGE-COTTRELL, Ltd. (International Precipitation Co., Inc.). Oct. 7, 1940, No. 14947. [Class 39 (i)] In apparatus for the electro-static precipitation of particles suspended in gases, of the type in which the gas is passed in succession through an ionizing field and then through a field which causes the charged particles to deposit on a collecting electrode, as described in Specifications 512,313, 536,753 and 540,508, the collecting electrode is constructed so that the main collection of the deposited particles takes place in a space shielded from the main gas stream. As shown in Fig. 1, the gas treating .chamber comprises two co-axial cylinders 10, 14 connected to earth and to the inlet and outlet gas conduits 17, 12. The high tension electrode consists of a part 20 of extended area so as to prevent corona discharge, and a fine wire electrode 27 connected thereto mechanically and electrically by an intermediate member 26. The wire electrode 27 provides the corona discharge for ionizing the gas and charging the particles and the intermediate part 26 is long enough to remove it from the effective influence of the non-discharging electrode 20. The part 14 of the collecting electrode opposite the part 20 of the high tension electrode is of a permeable structure such as mesh, expanded metal &c. The part 16 opposite the ionizing electrode may be solid, as shown, or permeable, and aligns with the part 14. A modification is described for horizontal, flow apparatus. In another modification, Fig. 6, the ionizing field is provided by fine high tension wires 61 alternating with large earthed tubes 60 disposed in line transversely across the gas stream, in the inlet end of the apparatus. The wires 61 are stretched between pairs of arms 63 on a frame 62 which is hung by hooks 65 on a bus-bar 64. The precipitating field is provided by high tension plate electrodes 72 suspended on transverse rods 73 one of which is connected to a lead 76, and earthed collecting electrodes consisting of spaced strips 71, of flat, curved or angular shape, disposed transversely of the direction of the gas stream and one behind the other. The strips are carried by rods 80 supported at their ends in longitudinal bars 82 which rest at their ends on transverse rods 83.
