[Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] A composition for moisture-proofing hydrophilic colloidal material, e.g. cellulose hydrate, cellulose ethers, gelatine, casein and water swelling resins, comprises a lacquer base, a wax, a wax-blending agent and a plasticizer comprising an ester of a paraffin dicarboxylic acid having at least five carbon atoms in the straight chain exclusive of those in the carboxyl or substituted carboxyl groups. Lacquer bases include cellulose esters, ethers and ether esters, polyvinyl resins, chlorinated diphenyl resin and alkyd or urea formaldehyde resins. The preferred wax is high melting-point paraffin wax. Wax blending agents include blown or boiled oils such as rape-seed, neats-foot, linseed, soya bean and perilla oils, wax-free gum dammar or ester gum, modified alkyd resins and phthalates of hydroxy fatty acids. Plasticizers include the mono- or di-esters of pimelic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic and brassylic acids with methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl or benzyl alcohols. Dibutyl sebacate is preferred. Other plasticizers, such as ethoxy-ethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, diphenyl phthalate, triphenyl phosphate and butyl benzoyl benzoate and other resins, pigments and dyes may be added. The base may be pre-coated with a urea-aldehyde resin. Specification 527,985 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use as plasticizer of dibasic acids having at least four carbon atoms in the chain and mono- or di-esters thereof. Adipic acid is referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
