Abstract

544,253. Cellulose derivative compositions ; coated fabrics &c. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd. July 25, 1940, No. 12161. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1939. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A cellulose derivative composition for use as a moisture-proofing coating composition or for making films comprises a wax or wax-like material, a gum or resin, and a polymer of a methacrylic ester containing an aliphatic group of 3, 4, 5 or 6 carbon atoms. The aliphatic group may be an alkyl or cyclo alkyl group. The cellulose derivative may be a nitrate, acetate, or other ester or a benzyl, ethyl, hydroxy ethyl, or other ether, or a mixed ester, ether, or ester-ether. Cellulose nitrates of 10.5-12.5 N content may be used. The. wax or waxy material may be paraffin, carnauba, candelilla, ceresin, Japan, palm, beeswax, Chinese insect wax, petrolatum, chlorinated hydrocarbons, or a synthetic wax. The gum or resin may be a rosinate, alkyd resin, polyvinyl resin, chlorinated diphenyl, phenol-formaldehyde, dammar, copal, kauri, ester gum, or "Beckasite" 1110 (Registered Trade Mark) which is an ester gum-rosin and maleic anhydride glyceride mixture. The composition may contain oils, dyes, or pigments. A plasticizer, such as tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, di-cyclohexyl phthalate, di-(dimethyl cyclohexyl) adipate, or butyl benzoyl benzoate may be present. Normal or iso-butyl, normal or iso-propyl, amyl, hexyl, or cyclo-hexyl methacrylate polymers may be used. Inter-polymers such as methyl-butyl or ethyl-butyl may be used. The composition is preferably used in solution in a solvent or mixture of solvents, e.g., ethyl acetate, toluene, and ethanol. The composition may be applied as a coating to sheets or films of regenerated cellulose ; cellulose acetate, nitrate, or other ester ; benzyl, or other cellulose ether ; gelatin, or casein. The composition may be cast or otherwise formed into self-supporting films. The compositions impart good heat-sealing properties to sheet wrapping-material coated with them. The films or coatings have less tendency to stick to metals such as parts of wrapping machinery with whicb they may make contact than films or coatings which do not contain the polymethacrylic ester constituent. The coated regenerated cellulose sheets are particularly suitable for wrapping food products such as butter, fish, or cheese. Specifications 283,109, [Class 2 (ii)], 395,687, and 437,284, are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of ethyl and lauryl methacrylate polymers and a polymer of methacrylic lauryl-imide as ingredients of the cellulose derivative compositions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
