Abstract

544,127. Dehydrogenation catalysts. MOND, A. L. (Universal Oil Products Co.). April 3, 1940, No. 5998. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Butadiene is prepared from normal butane in a two stage dehydrogenation process, in which butane is subjected at a temperature from 550‹- 650‹C. and under a'pressure of from 0.5-3 atmos. absolute to contact with two separate bodies of a composite dehydrogenation catalyst composed of a carrier of low catalytic activity and an oxide of an element other than chromium selected from the left-hand columns of Group IV V, and VI of the Periodic Table. The carrier is selected from the group comprising aluminium oxide, magnesium oxide, bauxite, montmorillonite clays, bentonite clays, kieselguhr, silica firebrick and glauconite. The temperature range for the second stage of the process may extend from 500‹-700‹C. The active compounds or promotors include generally compounds and particularly oxides of titanium, zirconium, cerium, hafnium, thorium, vanadium, colombium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten and uranium. The preparation of the catalysts is described and information is furnished in detail about the most suitable compounds to use and the best methods of preparing them in the case of the elements titanium zirconium, cerium, hafnium, thorium, vanadium, colombium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten and uranium. The preferred carrier material is activated aluminium oxide, and methods of making this are described.
