[Class 2 (iii)] A synthetic resin is prepared by interpolymerizing, by the application of heat and/or light, a mixture of at least one polycrotyl ester of a saturated poly carboxylic acid and at least one modified or unmodified polymerizable polyhydric alcohol ester of an α unsaturated a # polycarboxylic acid. Specified saturated polycarboxylic acids which may be used in preparing the polycrotyl esters are :-oxalic, malonic, succinic, adipic, glutaric, pimelic, sebacic, azelaic, suberic, tricarballylic, cyclopropane dicarboxylic, cyclohexane dicarboxylic, alkyl cycloalkone polycarboxylic, phthalic, benzoyl phthalic, terephthalic, benzophenone dicarboxylic, citric and tartaric acids. Specified polyhydric alcohols are : ethylene glycol, di-, tri- and tetraethylene glycols, propylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, thiodiglycol, glycerine and pentaerythritol. Specified α unsaturated α # polycarboxylic acids are : maleic, monohalomaleic, fumaric, monohalofumaric, citraconic, mesaconic, acetylene dicarboxylic, aconitic, itaconic, α methyl itaconic, α ethyl itaconic, and α α dimethyl itaconic acids. The unsaturated acid esters may be modified by replacing a part of the unsaturated acid with a saturated polycarboxylic acid, such as succinic, adipic, glutaric, pimelic, sebacic, azelaic, suberic, tricarballylic, phthalic, benzoyl phthalic or terephthalic acid. Polymerization catalysts may be present during the process. Examples are given. The resins may be used alone, or with fillers such as α cellulose, shredded cellulose derivatives, wood flour, asbestos, paper and cloth, in the production of coating compositions, impregnants, adhesives and moulded articles.
