Abstract

543,865. Treating sewage; filters; manures. COO MBS, J. A. Sept. 14, 1940, No. 14201. [Classes 46 and 111] A sewage treatment and compost making plant comprises a tank for aeration or other treatment of the crude sewage, a compost bed for the fermentation of refuse, means for spraying sludge or effluent from the tank over the compost bed, and a filter bed with means for spraying thereover effluent from the tank, with or without activated sludge. With the plant shown the crude sewage is passed successively through tanks 16, 18, as described in Specification 514, 627. Sludge deposited in sumps 17 in the tank 16 is passed by ejectors 47 and a pipe 45 to a composting bed 23. Sludge collecting in sumps 19 in the tank 18 is passed by ejectors 20 to a chamber 21 where it is reactivated by air under pressure and from which it is passed to composting beds 23, 24, or to filter beds 35, 36. Effluent from the tank 18 overflows into a channel 22 and passes to the composting or filter beds. The composting beds 23, 24 may be constructed and operated as described in Specifications 496,547, 521,894, and 521,895, use being made of a mechanical labourer, as described in Specification 521,939, [Group XXX]. Layers of garbage or dustbin refuse, sewage sludge, and prevously prepared dry compost are mixed and aerated by means of hot air on the bed 23, and the mixed materials are passed to the bed 24, where agitation and aeration are continued till fermentation is completed. Reactivated sludge from the chamber 21 may be sprayed on the materials on the beds 23, 24. The filter beds 35, 36 may be constructed and operated as described in Specification 542,008. The effluent from the tank 18 is passed successively through the beds, over which it and reactivated sludge from the chambers 21 are separately sprayed. Air is passed through both beds, either upwardly or downwardly. Colloidal matter is flocculated in the filter 35 and subjected to nitrification in the filter 36. The beds are separated by a passage-way 34 which may contain a trough for the supply of liquid to the beds and valve for controlling the flow of air and liquid. A reserve bed 60 which can serve either as a composting bed or a filter is provided.
