B., WELLS, J. M., WELLS, A. T., and WILLIAMS, E. E., (constituting AMERICAN OPTICAL CO.), April 30, 1940, No. 7767. Convention date, May 1, 1939. [Classes 1 (iii) and 91] [Also in Groups VI and XXVIII] A material, primarily intended as a rouge substitute is obtained by subjecting kaolinic clay to a heat treatment for a sufficient time' to permit the individual particles of clay to reach a temperature of 1000-2100'F. without causing an appreciable portion of the clay to sinter during the removal of the water of hydration and also during the subsequent heat treatment. A fine grained non-toxic non-staining material is obtained after grinding, which is suitable for polishing glass but also as a pumice substitute in toothpaste, as a dust filter, a solid adsorbent or catalyst. It may also be used in purifying oils. In order to find the best temperature for treating the kaolin, a test is made in which the course of calcination is followed by means of thermo-couples, one being freely exposed in the furnace and the other embedded in the kaolin. In the case of the kaolin examined, the best temperature, confirmed by actual polishing of glass, is a point somewhat lower than the temperature at which the re-action becomes exothermic.
