Abstract
543,711. Electrostatic separators. MASSE, T. J. Sept. 2, 1940, Nos. 13760, 13761, 13762 and 13763. Convention dates, Sept. 30, 1939, Nov. 24, 1939, Feb. 8, 1940 and March 26, 1940. [Class 72] In the electro-static separation of fabric fragments from rubber fragments in a mixture of the same, the mixture is passed into an electrostatic field formed by a repelling electrode and a collector electrode charged to such an extent that the fabric fragments are attracted, and adhere, to the latter electrode, the fragments being subsequently removed therefrom. The fragments on the repelling electrode are agitated and may be screened before arriving in the electro-static field. The humidity of the air in the vicinity of the collector electrode is controlled so as to maintain its surface in a dry condition. The mixture of free fabric segments, free rubber segments and rubber fragments containing embedded fabric fragments is fed from a hopper 4 on to spreader boards 5 forming part of a frame 6 mounted on flexible legs 7 which enable it to vibrate under the influence of out-of-balance weights 8 which may be rotated by a motor 9. The fragments pass on to a screen 10 mounted on the framing 6, free rubber fragments passing through the screen into a shoot 11. The rest of the material passes over a repelling electrode 13 and under collecting electrodes 12 comprising metal cores 19 enwrapped by sleeves 20 of di-electric material and an outer covering of felt 21 or other material having a minutely tentacled surface. The electrode 13 is earthed and the collectors 12 are charged from a rectifier 22 by brushes 23. The fabric segments are attracted to the collectors 12 are removed through slotted headers 15 and conduits 16 by a fan 14. To improve the efficiency of the apparatus, field plates 24 connected to the electrode 13 are provided near the collectors 12 as well as a shield plate 26 and the interrupter switch 25 may be provided in the rectifier circuits. The air in the neighbourhood of the collectors 12 may be dried by a heating element 27 placed in front of a reflector 28, Counter-charging electrodes may be arranged in front of the collectors 12 so that the materials may pass through a field between the countercharging electrodes and the repelling electrode before passing into the field between the latter and one of the collectors.
