543,685. Quaternary cyclic amidines. GEIGY AKT.-GES., J. R. Dec. 10, 1940, No. 17498. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] Quaternary cyclic amidines of the general formula in which R, is an aliphatic residue containing at least 12 carbon atoms or an araliphatic residue, R2 is an araliphatic, aromatic, hydroaromatic, or heterocyclic residue ; R3 is an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl residue; X is any residue which may belong to a further ring system, and An is an anion, 'for example, sulphate, acetate, lactate or cyanide may be prepared by alkylating or aralkylating N- alkylated, N-aralkylated or N-arylated benzimidazoles which may be aralkylated or arylated in the N position. Derivatives containing halogen substituents are preferred. In a typical example' 4-chlorobenzoyl-o-nitraniline is reduced, the imidazole is passed by splitting off water at 180-200‹C. and is pararalkylated with 3: 4-dichlorobenzyl chloride in trichlorobenzene.
