543,321. Facsimile telegraphy. CREED & CO., Ltd. Oct. 11, 1940, No. 15167. Convention date, Oct. 11, 1939. [Class 40 (iii)] A facsimile telegraph system comprises a plurality of facsimile transmitters each having access to a lesser number of facsimile recorders over automatic hunting switches, and means automatically responsive to a calling signal from any one of said transmitters for setting one of said switches in operation to connect a calling transmitter to an idle recorder. Means are also provided for (1) preventing connection of an idle recorder which is not in condition for reception, (2) maintaining connection until transmitter has completed its transmission, and (3) enabling a preferred transmitter to be connected to the first idle recorder irrespective of the number of transmitters awaiting connection instead of allowing connection in normal sequence. As shown in Fig. 1, five sub-stations A ... E are each connected by lines 11 to relays 24, 26 ... 29, stepping switches 21, 22, 23, and jacks 17 at a central station M, which includes recorders 13, 14, 16 associated with the stepping switches, and transmitters 18 associated with plugs 19 for the jacks 17. The stepping switches are operated by magnets with armature switches 31 ... 34 so connected that a call signal received by one of the relays 24, 26 ... 29 causes the first free recorder to be connected through its stepping switch to the substation from which the call signal originates. Many details of suitable circuit systems are described. The transmitters may be as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,158,391 and the receivers as in Specification 543,037.
