Abstract

542,361. Reciprocating pumps for liquids. CLARK, G. M. (Auto Research Corporation). May 20, 1940, No. 8956. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIV] The bearings of a power press are supplied with lubricant by a plunger pump 25 actuated by the press crankshaft 15 through a distributing pipe system having flow metering outlets 31, 32, 39, 40, 42, 43, connected in parallel and offering much greater obstruction than the bearings and pipe system, one of the metering outlets serving as a return to the pump and being adjustable to control the delivery of lubricant if the number of lubricating points or the viscosity of the lubricant is varied. The crankshaft may be operated by the flywheel 16 through a rolling key clutch supplied with lubricant through lines 34, 46 connected by a flexible hose 45 which permits opening of a screen enclosure or guard 44 without derangement of the lubricating system. Fig. 8 shows a preferred form of drip plug comprising a body having a central bore 48 fitted with a pin 49. The inlet end of the bore is enlarged to receive a strainer 51 and the outlet end is enlarged to receive a spring pressed valve 53. The pump 25 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 may be mounted on the lever 73 of a housing 70 containing the lubricant. The pump may consist of a plunger 117. reciprocating in a block 109 secured by a nut 113 to a bracket 110 depending from the cover. The semi-spherical upper end 118 of the plunger is pressed by a spring 120 against a ring 121 at the base of a socket 119 formed in a rod 9 slidable in the cover 73. At each revolution of the shaft 15 a connecting rod 23 rocks a shaft 79 carrying a lever 90 which raises the rod 95 and plunger 47 against the resistance of a spring 127, the return movement being effected by the spring 127, and excessive pressure in the distributing system being prevented by the spring 120. Lubricant is thereby drawn into a chamber 115 at the bottom of the block 109 past a felt filter 139, fitter screens 138, and ball valve 135 and is discharged past a ball valve 136 to a chamber 145 on the cover 73. Part of the lubricant flows from the chamber 145 through tube 147 to the distributing system and part passes through an adjustable drip plug 171 to a pocket 77 on the cover plate from which it can overflow into the housing 70. The drip plug 171 comprises a ball check valve 176 and conical valve 181 which is adjusted to regulate the return flow according to the number of bearings being lubricated or speed of rotation of the driving shaft. The valve 181 has a flat on part of its periphery. The connecting rod operating the shaft 79 may be disconnectable from or have a slotted connection with the shaft so as to allow the shaft to be operated manually to flush the bearings. Alternatively an additional hand pump 25a may be provided connected to the distributing system. A suitable hand pump shown in Fig. 10 comprises a piston 411 consisting of reversed packing cups 412, 413 and metal cups 415, 416 secured to a rod 421 which is slidable by means of a handle 428 in a sleeve 409 against the resistance of a spring 422. The sleeve 409 carries a cup 430 enclosing an insert 433 formed with inlet and outlet ports 432, 440 and fitted with an inlet check valve 439 which is pressed against its seat when the pump is discharged by an extension 419 of the rod 421. The lubricant passes from the ports 440 through a filter 441 and screen .442 to an outlet conduit 448 leading to the distributing system.
