Abstract

542,034. Artificial filaments, films etc.; polyamides. DREYFUS, H., MONCRIEFF, R. W., and SAMMONS, C. W. June 21, 1940, No. 10666. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] Artificial filaments, fibres, threads, yarns, films, foils, and like shaped articles are obtained by shaping a solution of a polyamide and setting it in a liquid medium comprising an organic aliphatic compound containing a hydroxyl group directly attached to a carbon atom. The polyamide may be obtained by condensing diamines with dicarboxylic acids or with halides or esters of these acids or by condensing amino-carboxylic acids with themselves or each other. The polyamide may be dissolved in a phenol or carboxylic acid such as formic acid, acetic acid, phenol, cresol, or resorcinol. The hydroxy compound employed in the coagulating medium may be an alcohol such as ethyl, methyl, propyl, or butyl alcohol, or it may be an aliphatic acid such as formic, acetic, propionic, or chloracetic acid. The alcohols may be used in anhydrous condition or diluted with water. The acids should generally be used diluted with water. When aqueous coagulating baths are used the filaments may readily be drawn out to produce filaments of high tenacity and good elasticity. Crinkled filaments may be obtained by allowing the filaments to fall under gravity to the bottom of the setting bath. The filaments may be converted into staple fibres. The films may be used for photographic purposes or for making splinterless glass or glass substitutes. In an example, hexamethylene diammonium adipate is heated with phenol. Adipic acid is added and heating is continued. The product is dissolved in formic acid and purified by precipitation and washing. It is re-dissolved in formic acid and passed from a pressure vessel through a filter of stainless steel gauze and glass wool to a spinning jet. The solution is extruded into a cold aqueous solution of formic acid. Specifications 529,510 and 541,592 are referred to.
