Abstract

541,722. Automatic exchange systems. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and TAYLOR, R. June 6, 1940, No. 9886. [Class 40 (iv)] In an arrangement wherein calling lines are identified at a later stage of the connections of which they form part by the transmission thereover of characteristic impulses, in order to permit a main exchange operator to call back when a PBX subscriber desires a toll or trunk call switching means are provided whereby PBX lines are identified by the number of the first line of the group when the PBX operator is in attendance and by their individual numbers at night or other times when the operator is absent. As shown, the identifying arrangement is of the kind disclosed in Specification 539,823 in which the test wires are connected through pairs of non-linear resistance units NLR to groups of common marking leads. It is assumed that the PBX has seven exchange lines numbered 4831-4837, and it will be seen that according to the condition of relay NS, the test wires are connected all to the units marking lead 1 or to the corresponding leads 1-7. This relay, which is polarized and which retains its armature in the position to which it is set, is controlled by the PBX operator by means of a hand-generator HG which is connected by keys KA, KU to either of two signalling circuits, conveniently the a leg of two lines of the group, which extend to the windings of NS shunted by rectifiers MRA, MRB.
