Abstract

541,412. Earth-moving machinery. BURNS, J. S. May 21, 1940, Nos. 9010 and 16114. [Class 68 (i)] In an earth-moving machine, an earth-moving blade is adjustably carried in front of a self-propelled tractor by members embracing the front of the tractor and comprising a parallel linkage extending outside each track sub-frame of the tractor and having the lower links pivoted to the rear of such sub-frames, and a front cross-member carried by said linkages and supporting the blade and adapted to adjust the depth of cut of the blade without changing its rake or camber. As shown, crawler tracks 4, 5, are pivotally journalled rearwardly to the main frame 1 about the axes of their driving sprockets 10. The mould board 14, with blade 15, is centrally pivoted or universally mounted at 17 to the front of a V-shaped transom 19 connected by horizontal hinge pins 24 to the front ends of channelled side arms 22 which are pivoted rearwardly at 20 on the outer sides of the tractor coaxially with the sprockets 10; T-section links 26, 27, parallel with the side arms 22 and connected thereto by intermediate links 71, 72, are pivoted to the main frame 1 at 30 vertically above the axes of sprockets 10, and forwardly at 34 to vertical standards 32, 33 integral with the transom 19, whereby the rake and camber of the mould board 14 remain constant during adjustment of the depth of cut, which is 'effected by pivoted hydraulic rams, 36, 37, supplied with fluid by a reservoir 39, pump 38 and control valve 40, and connected to rocking plates 45, 46, pivoted at 47 to the main frame 1 and forwardly to links 49, 50, hinged to the transom 19. The mould board is adjustable horizontally about pivot 17 and is held in adjusted position by arms 55; 56 adjustably connected to the mould board by pins 57, 61, and each provided with three apertures adapted to be engaged by pins 58, 62, passed through lugs 59, 60, on the standards 32, 33. Cheek plates 63, 64, are carried by the crawler track frames and engaged by rollers 65, 66, on the side arms 22 to take up side thrust. To facilitate removal of the mould board, side arms &c. as a unit, running plates 69, 70, may be detachably bolted to the crawler track frames. and each has welded thereto a web 73 welded to rectangular plates 75, 76, spaced by packing 77 and connected by a journal pin 80 for the side arm. The hydraulic cylinders 36, 37, may be replaced by other power mechanism or by hand gear. Where the crawler track frames oscillate about an axis other than that of the rear driving sprockets, the mould board may be adjustable about the same axis. In another form, the cylinders 36, 37, and plates 45, 46, may be trunnioned on superstructures carried by the crawler track frames.
