Abstract
540,399. Combinations of instruments current measurements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 29, 1940, No. 12293. Convention date, July 29, 1939. [Class 37] A pair of instruments 11, 12 are mounted with their moving systems coaxial, the shaft 27 of one instrument passing through a hollow rotor 33 and hollow shaft 39 of the other instrument. The instrument 12 comprises a circular base 15 from which project posts 16. Secured to the base is a stationary field magnet comprising a laminated core 17 carrying field coils 18. The rotor 20 is a transversely magnetized cylindrical permanent magnet made from a mixture of powdered magnetite, ferric oxide, and cobaltic oxide moulded under pressure and mounted on the shaft 27. A jewelled end bearing is mounted in a screw 21 carried by a plate 22 which is fastened to the posts 16. A copper or aluminium damping cylinder 19 surrounds the rotor 20 and is pressed against the base 15 by a dished spring washer 23. The instrument 11 has a base 29, posts 30, magnet core 31, field coils 32, and magnetic rotor 33 similar to the corresponding parts of the instrument 12. The damping cylinder 34 is in the form of a cup having a flange 35 by which it is attached to a plate 36 screwed to the posts 30. The hollow shaft 39 includes stub shafts 40, 41 with conical portions engaging ball bearings 44, 45 and a hollow spindle 46 which has a portion 47 of greater diameter than the bore in the rotor 33 and a portion 48 fitting the bore in the rotor and extending into the stub shaft 41. The stub shaft 40 is secured to the spindle 46 by a sleeve 51. A ring jewel 55 is set in the sleeve 51 between the stub shaft 40 and the portion 47 of the hollow spindle 46 and forms a bearing for the shaft 27 of the instrument 12. A collar 56 is secured to the shaft 27 to bear against the jewel 55 and serve as an end thrust bearing. Pointers 61, 62 are attached to the ends of the shafts 27, 39 and co-operate with concentric scales on a scale plate 58.
