Abstract

540,020. Safety-valves. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and GIBSON, J. H. March 28, 1940, No. 5582. [Class 135] A safety-valve of the kind in which the lift is increased by the action of the fluid escaping between a flange on the valve member and a surrounding wall has adjustable byepass ports formed in the surrounding wall. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the valve member 1 has a convex lower surface, an annular seating face 38 and a conical side face terminating in an annular flange 32. The annular valve seat face is formed on the bottom of a conical recess 39 in a seat member secured in position by bolts 54 passing through lugs 541. The recess 39 is tapered at a smaller angle than the edge surface of the valve member and is connected to the seating surface 38 by a curved surface 56. In a modification the conical surface of the recess is interrupted by a cylindrical part. A ported sleeve 42 is mounted on the seat and is adapted to control bye-pass ports 34 leading from the conical recess. This sleeve is adjusted by a nut 48 housed iii a recess in a fitting 50 screwed to the valve casing to compress a packing engaging a spindle having a pin and slot connection with an arm 44 on the sleeve. The spindle 45 may have a flat indicating surface 52 and may cooperate with a stop secured to one of the bolts 54. A piston 8 subject to the pressure of the escaping fluid works in a liner 27 held in position by a fitting 31 and has a lost-motion connection with the valve spindle 6. The other side of the piston is vented to atmosphere through a passage 30. The valve is loaded by a spring 19 housed in a case 12 between two abutments 9, 20, the abutment 20 being adjusted by a screw 16 cooperating with a screwed bush 231 and limit ring 23. A cap 24 secured to the valve spindle by a padlocked cotter 25 covers the ends of the valve spindle and adjusting screw 16 and is connected with an easing lever 26.
