Abstract

539,720. Road-vehicle suspensions ; vibration damping ; mounting motors. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., and TRESILIAN, S. S. May 11, 1940, No. 8513. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXI] A method of damping a motor-vehicle suspension consists in mounting a mass on a stationary part of a road-wheel assembly for up-and-down movement against a resistance, for damping the wheel in its up- and-down movements relatively to the chassis-frame and in addition providing a separate damping means to act in a similar way on the chassis-frame, to damp the latter against pitching and bumping. The stationary part may be the brake anchor plate 11 on which is secured a vertically-arranged cylinder 12 housing a piston 13 of appropriate mass which reciprocates above a supporting spring 14. An upper return spring 15 is provided. The two ends of the cylinder are filled with fluid, preferably at atmospheric pressure, and the ends communicate by way of a bleed hole 17 in the piston. The piston, instead of itself constituting the appropriate mass, may be connected to an appropriate mass. The amplitude of vibration of the piston 13 may be greater than the amplitude of the wheel when bouncing. The resistance may involve mechanical friction means. The chassis frame 28 may be damped by mounting thereon a cylinder 27 comprising a piston 25 which supports, via a piston rod 21, the front end of the power unit 19A. The cylinder 27 has a fluid reservoir 33 communicating with the liquid inside the cylinder by a valve 34. A torque-reaction damper 22 is secured to one of the chassis longitudinals by means of a bracket 23 and has its movable element linked to a trunnion 24 extending forwardly from the power unit well below the rocking axis of the latter. Some part of the rear of the vehicle, e.g. the fuel tank, spare wheel or luggage boot, may be supported for up-and-down movement relatively to the chassis-frame against a resistance.
