Abstract

539,448. Surgical illuminating appliances. NEUGASS, E. A. July 31, 1939, No. 22156. Convention date, March 9. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] An appliance for transmitting light to illuminate cavities of the body for diagnostic and like purposes comprises an integral piece of plastic organic material, e.g. methyl methacrylate having a cylindrical or like portion for attachment to a support, and an opposite end portion extending at an angle and joined to the cylindrical &c. portion by a substantially wedge-shaped intermediate portion. The basal end 30 of the appliance is mounted adjacent to a source of light, e.g. a lamp 33, Fig. 1. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the outer surface 40 is flattened and may be matted or polished according to the requirement of a diffused light over this area or a concentrated light at the end 41. In a modification, Fig. 8, the terminal part 54 is bent at right angles flattened and turned inward at the end 55. In another modification, Figs. 16, 17, the appliance may be formed by compressing and bending a cylindrical body to the form shown. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes straight or curved appliances of uniform cross-section. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
