Abstract

539,436. Grinding-wheels. NAGY, A. March 7, 1940. No. 4284. [Class 60] A grinding tool for trepanning or dental work or for grinding dies, moulds and cutting tools of tungsten, vanadium, tantalum, titanium &c., is made by placing a body 10, Fig. 5, of copper, nickel-chromium, steel containing 1.1 per cent. of carbon, or other metal in a die 11 with a thin uniform layer 15 of particles of diamond, silicon carbide, aluminium oxide, boron carbide, tungsten carbide or other grinding material retained by a greasy or sticky material between the body and the die and then applying pressure to force the particles into the face of the body. The particles may be retained on the body or the die by means of a thin coat of petroleum jelly, if the pressing is done cold, or on the die by soft soap &c. if the body, e.g. of steel, is heated before pressing. A succession of layers of grinding particles may be forced into a body by repeating the process as desired and. if the particles do not project sufficiently, some of the body metal may be removed by acid or other chemical. Grinding particles may be forced into faces parallel with the direction of applied pressure by causing this to expand the body as shown in Fig. 2.
