Abstract

539,391. Colour photography. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). Feb. 5, 1940, No. 2201. [Class 98 (ii)] In the production of colour photographs from multilayer material by the dye-destruction process, balance as regards contrast is obtained by the incorporation in one or more lightsensitive layers, which contain an imageforming dye or dye-forming substance, of an auxiliary dye absorbing light by which the layer containing it is intended to be exposed, and removing the auxiliary dye after exposure. The auxiliary dye is preferably soluble in water or sodium carbonate solution, and may have a tendency to diffuse and should not be bleached image-wise. In three-layer material in which at least two emulsion layers contain imageforming dyes, auxiliary dyes are preferably, but not necessarily, employed in each imagedye-containing layer. The auxiliary dye is preferably of a colour complementary to the layer-sensitivity. The material may be a threelayer or a two-layer mixed grain material. The image-forming dye may be added as such or in its leuco form, the dye being then produced before or after exposure. The dye-destruction bath may comprise thiourea, sulphuric acid, and potassium bromide or may be alkaline stannous chloride. In an example, the material comprises a support carrying in superposition an infra-red sensitized emulsion containing a magenta image dye and a blue-green auxiliary dye, a green-sensitized emulsion containing a yellow image dye and a magenta auxiliary dye, and a blue-sensitive emulsion containing a blue-green image dye and a yellow auxiliary dye. The infra-red sensitizer may be kryptocyanine and the green-sensitizer pinaflavol. The material is exposed through the bluesensitive layer. Auxiliary dyes referred to are Tartrazine, Chromotrop BB, Alizarin Celestol, and Brilliant Paper Yellow. Specifications 133,034, [Class 98 (ii)], 468,560, 477,524, 503,752, 521,746, 521,833, 521,834, 521,835, 521,836, 521,837 and 521,888 are referred to.
