Abstract
538,728. Closures for containers. ABBEY, A. (Beardsley, E. S.). Feb. 13, 1940, No. 2777. [Class 125 (iii)] A container for liquids is closed by a body having a liquid drain passage 11 and an air passage 12 with an air filtering chamber 17 located in it; this chamber is provided with means tc prevent the escape of liquid through the air passage, while permitting air to flow into the container as liquid is withdrawn. In the form shown in Fig. 2 a tube 13 is inserted in the passage 12, and a porcelain filter with rounded corners is inserted in the chamber 17. The plug 10 of the closure has a ridge 19 extending across its top surface, and flexible sealing members 20 formed of rubber or like material are fitted on each. The whole may be surmounted by a cap. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the air inlet tube 13a receives a split tube 23 formed integrally with the plug 11a. An enlarged opening 24 with a constricted outlet 25 forms the filter chamber and contains cotton or other filtering material. The split tube 23 acts as a valve and permits air to enter the container but prevents liquid from escaping from the container. In this case the container neck is beaded and the edge of the cap 28 is spun under the bead 26. A tearing flap may be provided on the cap. In a modification, a capillary tube member is located above the filter chamber, and a liquid pool is formed in the chamber or in an enlargement of the air tube. In the modification shown in Fig. 7 the plug 43 has a concave recess 44 extending round the greater part of the circumference and this recess forms a closed conduit when the stopper is in position. The filter chamber 47 has a porous filter member 42 and communicates with the recess 44 by the short passage 48. The recess communicates with the interior of the container through the passage 49. When the container is inverted, liquid flows from tube 50 into recess 44 but does not flow into the filter chamber. The main discharge passage 46 may be central or near one side of the plug.
