Abstract

538,589. Trimming welded joints. STEVENS, A. H. (United Engineering & Foundry Co.). Nov. 27, 1939, No. 3830/41. Divided out of 536,832. [Class 83 (iv)] Flash or burr is trimmed from a welded joint by curved blades mounted for rotation above and below the line of weld and rotated when the line of weld is positioned there between to trim the flash or burr progressively from the line of the weld. The strips after welding are fed into position between a pair of rotary flash trimming tools consisting of sector shaped parts 7, 8 carrying removable adjustable single or double helical blades 9, 10. The parts 7, 8 are operated by gears 11, 12 from a fluid pressure motor 13 pivotally mounted in brackets 15 and the blades come into engagement with the flash only adjacent the line of weld and during the movement of the blades past substantially a line joining the centres of the blade supporting shafts. If the blades operate in a direction towards the welding apparatus the strips are held during trimming of the joint in a clamp 18. If the cutters operate in the opposite direction the parts are held during trimming by one of the welding clamps. Specification 536,832 is referred to.
