Abstract
538,549. Moulding tyre valves. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. June 14, 1940, No. 10348. Convention date. Aug. 1, 1939: [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] The stem of a tyre valve is comprised entirely of moulded heatset plastic material and has means formed in the wall of the bore through the stem for releasably securing the interior parts of a valve in position. When making the stem a core member 10 of rubber compound which will cure to a hard consistency, formed by extrusion or wrapping a strip of rubber round a mandrel, is aligned with a shorter cylindrical element of softer compound and enclosed in two sleeves 12, 13 of soft compound, the sleeve 13 being shorter than the sleeve 12. Circular or oval layers 14, 15, 16 of successively increasing sizes are applied to the base of the composite stem and the whole is inserted in a curing mould 20. This mould has a cavity 21 corresponding to the desired external shape of the stem, which includes a screw-threaded part to form the thread for attaching the usual dust-cap. A detachable core member 29 having a screwthreaded part 30 to form internal threads for attaching the interior parts of the valve is inserted through the base of the mould. A cover plate 35 having a square boss 37 and a hole 36 adapted to engage the upper end of the core member is secured to the top of the mould. After curing or partial curing the core member is first unscrewed by means of a screw-driver slot 40 and then the stem is unscrewed by the insertion of a suitable wrench in the square depression formed by the boss 37. The stem may be moulded without the threads which are afterwards formed by a die and tap. The hard compound may be one containing over 25 parts of sulphur to every 100 parts of rubber and the soft compound one containing from 5 to 10 parts of sulphur for every 100 parts of rubber. The hard rubber part may be first semi-cured and the soft portions subsequently moulded and vulcanized, adhesion between the rubber compounds being secured by the use of a vulcanizing cement. Other thermoplastics alone or mixed with rubber may be used.
