Abstract

538,252. Road-traffic signals; lamp failure, warning devices for. MIDDELKAMP, A. A. May 9, 1940, No. 8331. Convention date, May 11, 1939. [Class 118 (ii)] A device for indicating the failure of any one or more of the lamps or other electrical apparatus on a motor vehicle comprises an armature 24 adapted to be actuated by an electromagnet 17 having a number of individual windings 18...23 each arranged in the circuit of a lamp or the like. The dimensions of the windings are such that when the normal current is passing through the various windings, the armature is held in engagement with a stop that assumes a different position when the circuit of one or more of the windings is interrupted by the failure of a lamp. The armature 24 may be mounted on a rotatable shaft 25 and normally kept in contact with a shaft by a spring. When any one or more of the lamps is in use, the armature rotates into contact with another stop and a disc 27 carried by the armature moves into position between a warning lamp 30 and an aperture 29. Failure of any of the lamps causes the shutter to uncover the aperture and allows the lamp 30 to be seen. The windings of the stop lamps 9 and of the traffic indicators 11, respectively, which are not normally in operation, are wound in the opposite sense to the other windings so that when these devices are operated, the shutter moves backwards and uncovers the aperture showing the driver that the device is working correctly, and also warns the driver if the direction indicator fails to return after the vehicle has completed a turn. The part 28 in which the aperture 29' is formed may be adjusted, by rotation for example, to bring the aperture into position for use when the armature is not deflected fully owing to less than the normal number of lamps being in use. In the daytime, when the direction indicator and stop lights only are in use, the disc may be arranged to uncover a second lamp.
