Abstract
537,955. Motor-vehicle bodies and frames. LEYLAND MOTORS, Ltd., and BAILEY, C. C. Nov. 16, 1939, No. 30213. [Class 108 (i)] [Also in Group XXXI] A combined body frame and chassis frame for motor-vehicles such as omnibuses including trolleybuses comprises main longitudinals extending almost the whole length of the vehicle at the sides and each comprising upper and lower members 1, 2 connected by diagonal bracing 3 and transverse bracket plates 9, two longitudinals being connected by cross-frames, each comprising a straight upper member 5 secured to the plates 9 and a lower member 6 upwardly bent at the ends and braced by struts 7 to the member 5 and by struts 17 to flange plates 8 on the plates 9. The members 1, 2 as shown, are of circular section tube and extend from the rear bulkhead, to the forward bulkhead 4 that divides the drivers cab from the passenger compartment. They are upwardly bent over the rear wheels and are there vertically one above the other and may be braced at this part by a plate web. The members 3, 5, 7 are also of circular section tube, the ends of the members 5 being split to embrace the plates 9 to which they are welded. The members 6, 17 each comprise a pair of angle irons secured together back to back, the members 6 being riveted to the plates 9. The members 5 may instead be of sheet metal bent to square section with wooden fillers, the struts 7 be of angle iron and the struts 17 be tubular. The body pillars 12 which may be of bent sheet metal lie against and are secured to the flange plates 8 of the bracket plates 9. Diagonal stay plates 14 extend from the intermediate bracket plates 9a to the pillars at their junction with longitudinal waist rails 13, the junctions being strengthened by gusset plates 27, 28. Flanges 19, 20 may be provided on the inner edges of the brackets 9. Continuous longitudinal plates 11, 21 respectively bear on the flange 20 and the bars 5 and terminate at the rear wheel arches. If the members 5 are tubular the floor 10 comprises transverse tongued and grooved boards bolted to these members with the interposition of packing pieces 23, 24, but if these members are of bent sheet metal with wooden fillers, the boards may run longitudinally. Parts such as the motor and transmission casings may be supported by longitudinal channel members 33 resting on the cross-members 6 and welded to the struts 7. The front springs are connected at their rear ends at 39 to the cross-members 38 at the bulkhead 4 and at the front ends, at 40 to a pair of members 41 inset from the sides and extending from the bulkhead to the dash-plate 42. A tube 43 extends from the longitudinal 1 to the dashplate. A longitudinal 45 extends inside each pair of rear wheels from the rear bulkhead to a bulkhead (not shown) immediately in front of the wheels where it rests on the cross-member 5 and is joined by a bracket 46 to one of the longitudinals 33 A cross-frame between the wheels comprises tubes 50 secured to brackets 49 on the members 45. The rear springs are connected at 51 to these brackets from which also extend tubes 52 to the longitudinals 2. A transverse bracket plate 53 extends from the longitudinals 1, 2 to the longitudinal 45 and rear pillars 12b, 12c, 12d are provided. An inclined plate 54 closes the body sides on the inside over the wheels.
