Abstract
537,653. Testing physical qualities of materials. ALEXANDER, J. W. Nov. 28, 1939, No. 30987. [Class 106 (ii)] Relates to machines where a metal sheet is forced through a die by a punch and consists in a torsionally resilient rotary driving means for effecting relative movement between punch and die, a style and operating mechanism therefor carried on and operable by said means, and a stationary chart holder mounted adjacent the style. A hollow body part a has mounted in the open upper end a die b througb which can pass a punch c on the upper end of a plunger d. This end is screw threaded into an axially movable but non-rotatable sleeve e having an annular support f for the metal sheet g to be tested. The sleeve e is in screw threaded engagement with a nut formed as worm wheel h non-movable axially. A worm n operable from a handle outside the part a drives the worm wheel. To determine the relative positions of plunger and sleeve preparatory to a test, the sleeve e is moved axially bv rotating the worm n until a hole s therein aligns with a spring plunger q normally withdrawn. The plunger d is then rotated until a blind hole t therein aligns with the plunger. The upper end of the punch c and the upper surface of the support f now lie flush and adjacent the die. If now a test is to be made, the catch is withdrawn and the worm n again rotated to move the sleeve to clamp the work, this being accompanied by a similar movement of the plunger due to its threaded engagement with the sleeve. The plunger d is feathered to a sleeve 2 supported in ball bearings 3. The sleeve is provided with tangential arms 13 between which and lugs 9 on a worm wheel 4 are spring pressed rods 11 through which the worm wheel drives the sleeve 2. Pivoted at 15 on one of the arms 13 is a lever 16 the short arm 17 of which engages one of the lugs 9 while the long arm carries a stylus 20. This is pivoted on a horizontal pin 22 and rests on a chart carried by a table 21 a cylindrical spigot on which is rotatable in the base of a carrier 23. The carrier may be raised and lowered relatively to the frame 24 by rack and pinion 25, 26. The spigot may be clamped at 30, 33 to the carrier. The 'arm 16 is held by a spring 18 against a strip 19. The stylus is given a radial movement which is a measure of the tangential force applied to the plunger d to turn it and an angular movement which is a measure of the deformation of the plate g.
