Abstract

537,517. Belt-fastening appliances. WHITTLE, C. H. Dec. 22, 1939, No. 32801. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group I] Consists in an appliance for drawing together the ends of conveyer or driving belts to facilitate the joining up of the ends whilst the belts are under tension, comprising a gripping device having two co-acting jaws extending the full width of the belt, clamping means at both ends of said jaws and traction means associated with said gripping device for operating both the clamping means and applying a pull to the belt in the direction of the other belt end. Two jaws a, b are provided of inverted T and I section respectively adapted to grip the belt e between them. The web g of the lower jaw b is bifurcated at each end to receive a pivot pin upon which is mounted a curved lever h carrying at its free end a roller i and a ring k. The web f of the upper jaw a has an extension l with a broad upper surface to constitute a cam track adapted to be engaged by the roller. The rings k are connected by a chain adapted to have a pull applied to it transversely at the middle of its length. Such pull first causes the rollers to act upon the cam tracks thereby pressing the jaws together, after which the belt ends are brought together. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 5, the jaws a, b are as before, but the lever h is mounted on a pivot h<1> in the lower web g and is formed with an arcuate end m having an upwardly extending flange n and a downwardly extending flange o. The inner surfaces of the flanges n, o form cam tracks for two rollers p mounted to rotate on spindles in the ends of the jaws a, b. The free end of each lever h has a chain attached thereto. In further modifications (1) the upper jaw comprises a bar or rod adapted to slide in inclined slots provided in two vertical brackets on each end of the lower jaw (2) the upper jaw again is in the form of a bar or rod to each end of which a lever is secured and over a substantial part of the length of which is welded a curved strip of metal eccentric to the rod. A pull upon cables attached to the levers causes the metal strip to grip the belt and then to .move it bodily. Relative lateral movement between the jaws may be prevented by pins.
