536,800. Resinous condensation products. STEVENS, A. H. (Harvel Research Corporation.) March 10, 1939, No. 7796. [Class 2 (iii)] Frictional elements, e.g. brakes, clutches, belting, pulley, facings, tyre treads &c., comprise, as frictional material, cashew nut shell liquid and/or ethers, esters, hydrogenation or decarboxylation products of cashew nut shell liquid, which have been modified to the dry, hard and infusible state, i.e. by condensation with aldehydes or by vulcanization, or both. The modified product may replace, wholly or partly, conventional friction materials, e.g. rubber. Preferably the cashew nut shell liquid or derivative is first converted to a viscous or ropy liquid, e.g. by polymerization by means of sulphuric acid, zinc chloride or aluminium chloride ; alternatively the product obtained by distilling cashew nut shell liquid under a low pressure may be employed. Modification to the dry, hard and infusible state is effected by condensation of the initial product with an aldehyde or aldehyde derivative, e.g. formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, furfuraldehyde or hexamethylene tetramine, or by vulcanizing with sulphur. In examples (1) a brake band fabricated of metal and asbestos has applied thereto a sheeted product formed by working up thickened cashew nut shell liquid with rubber, sulphur, barytes and china wood oil. (2) the rubber and thickened liquid of (1) are worked together on mixing rolls together with hexamethylene tetramine before adding the other ingredients ; (3) brake bands are made by immersing cotton &c. bands in a mixture of thickened cashew nut shell liquid and a syrupy cresolformaldehyde condensation product; (4) a brake block is moulded from a mixture of a rubber-like product (obtained by curing the thickened cashew nut shell liquid product at 26‹-285‹ F.), rubber, asbestos and lead or copper wire; (5) the thickened product is modified to the hard, dry and infusible state by mixing with paraformaldehyde or hexamethylene tetramine ground to dust and milled with rubber, asbestos &c. moulded or pressed to shape and cured ; (6) a thin coat for belting is obtained by mixing together the thickened product, rubber, litharge, carbon, sulphur and triethanolamine, the mixture being applied to the belt by calendering and cured ; (7) and (8) a mixture of the thickened product and cresylic acid are reacted with formaldehyde to obtain a syrupy resin which, after removal of water, is worked up with rubber and fillers to form brake bands and clutch facings. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 481,960.
