[Class 2 (iii)] 2- Methyl-3- methoxypyridine-4:5-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester is prepared by heating the acid with methyl alcohol and a mineral acid, or by treating it with diazomethane. The ester, which may be converted into its hydrohalide salts, is useful in the synthesis of Vitamin B6. An example is given.
