[Class 40 (iv)] Automatic ticketing apparatus comprises means for printing a series of invariable headings on a paper strip, means for printing the usual variable information against these headings and means for severing the strips to form a ticket. When a ticket is to be printed a motor MS is started from control apparatus (not shown) on which the first character to be printed is indicated by the connection of lead T to the corresponding position in the bank of a switch 8. The type wheel 22 and switch 8 are on a shaft 7 driven via a slipping clutch and when tbemarked position is reached, magnet 11 is operated to stop the shaft 7. Groups CT, CP, CG of cams are coupled to a driving shaft 3 by slipping clutches and are normally held stationary by magnets 24, 36, 45, momentary operation of which allows the cam group CT, CP to make one complete rotation and group CC half a rotation. Magnet 24 is operated at the same time as magnet 11 and both are released when cam 32 moves off normal. Cam 27 operates typing hammer 29 and shifts the type wheel 22 one space axially to the right and cam 34 operates magnet 12 to re-start shaft 7 and sends a signal over TS to the controlling apparatus to cause the marking to be changed. The second and subsequent characters in the line are then printed in a similar way. At the end of the line, ground on P causes a momentary operation of magnet 36 whereupon arm 41 controls the release of the type wheel 22 to its normal axial position, the advance of the paper strip and the advance of a printing roller 73 bearing the invariable matter and arm 40 subsequently operates printing hammer 74 to impress this invariable matter on the next ticket. Before the finalitem has been printed,cam 64 energizes magnet 45 to release the cam group CG whereupon roller 161 is drawn across the end of the ticket to form a sail thereon to assist its pneumatic despatch. Three blank lines are allowed after the printed matter, magnet 36 being held operated over cam-controlled springs 67. Finally magnet 48 allows cam group CG to make the second half of its rotation and lever 51 operates guillotine blades to cut the ticket off.
