Abstract

536,178. Directive wireless systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., EARP, C. W., and COLES, R. V. Nov. 3, 1939, No. 29315. [Class 40 (v)] Relates to a radio-compass of the kind described in Specification 490,940 where the signals received from a pair of crossed frame aerials are each separately modulated before being combined on a common amplifier and fed to an indicator. According to the invention the input to and output from the modulators are periodically changed-over by a switch. As shown in Fig. 1, signals from a North-South aerial N, S, are applied to push-pull amplifiers M<SP>1</SP>, M<SP>2</SP> together with a lowfrequency modulating-frequency O<SP>1</SP>. Similarly signals from an East-West aerial E, W, are applied to the amplifiers. M<SP>3</SP>, M<SP>4</SP> together with a modulating-frequency from O<SP>2</SP>. The modulated outputs are combined through a phasing valve PV with the signals from a non-directive aerial V. One part of the resulting signals is fed to a pair of phones OP. The other part is applied to the search-coil S of a dynamometer (or to the deflecting coils of a cathode ray tube) the field-coils being fed with currents from the modulators O<SP>1</SP>, O<SP>2</SP> respectively. To detect any unbalance in the circuits, the coil NS is switched over to the amplifiers M<SP>3</SP>, M<SP>4</SP> and the coil WE to the amplifiers M<SP>1</SP>, M<SP>2</SP>, and the connections to the field coils CN, CS, CW, CE, are simultaneously reversed. The mean reading of the two indicators then gives the correct bearing. If quadrantal error is present, it can be compensated by modifying the relative effectiveness of the field coils, for instance by means of a variable shunt resistance.
