Abstract
535,978. Trichloro propionic acid and its esters. JONES. A. D., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 26, 1939, No. 28728. [Class 2 (iii)] Chlorinated compounds are obtained by reacting α-chloracrylic acid or an ester thereof with chlorine, preferably in the presence of a chlorination catalyst, e.g. bromine, iodine, ferric chloride, or aluminium chloride. The reaction may be effected by passing chlorine into the liquid acid or ester, or into a solution of the acid or ester in a solvent which does not undergo chlorination at the temperatures employed, e.g. carbon tetrachloride and tetrachlorethane. Alkyl, aryl or aralkyl esters may be chlorinated, the following being specified :- the methyl, ethyl, propyl, n-butyl, n-amyl, isopropyl, isobutyl, isoamyl, 2-ethylhexyl, pinacolyl, pentamethylethyl, phenyl, tolyl and benzyl esters. The primary products are α : α:-#-trichlorpropionic acid and esters thereof, but higher chlorination products may be formed, particularly if elevated temperatures or excess of chlorine be used. The products have toxic properties towards wire worm. In examples (1) α : α : #-trichlorpropionic acid methyl ester is obtained by chlorinating α-chloroacrylic acid methyl ester, (2) α: α : #-trichloropropionic acid n-butyl and monochloro-n-butyl esters are obtained by chlorinating α-chloroacrylic acid n-butyl ester, and (3) a compound of the formula CH 2 Cl-CCl 2 -COOC 8 H 15 Cl is obtained from the ethylhexyl ester.
