Abstract

534,713. Optical apparatus. BARTOW BEACONS, Inc. Oct. 27, 1939, No. 28827. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1938. [Class 97 (i)] Apparatus for obtaining an increased third dimensional effect when observing, from a moving vehicle, aircraft, &c. an object not in the line of travel of the vehicle &c. comprises means moved so as to cause the eyes of the observer to view the object alternately and successively at intervals within the period of persistence of vision which are long relatively to the periods of observation ; the increased effect is due to the increased spacing of the observer's view points owing to the movement of the vehicle &c. As shown, binoculars 1, supported by a handle structure 2, have a rotating disc 3 arranged so that an aperture therein aligns with the eyepieces alternately. The disc may be driven, by a flexible shaft in a support 5, from a motor in a housing 6 ; a dry cell, energizing the motor, may be carried within the handle. A modification is described in which the disc is carried in a wall of the vehicle &c., and viewing eyepieces, diametrically or otherwise spaced in relation to the disc, are provided. The disc may have more than one aperture. A plurality of shutters may be used.
