Abstract
534,655. Valve tappets, internal-combustion engines. TRIGGS W. W. (Thompson Products Inc.). Aug. 9, 1939, No. 22957. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A valve tappet or like vibratory y mechanical linkage, having driving and driven links BB, 22, with a clearance 20 therebetween which is closed upon valve actuation, is provided with an inertia member 32 which acts by impact when the links return to their initial positions to increase the said clearance 20, means also being provided to thereafter eliminate the said aditional clearance. As shown, a wedge 26 pressed in place by a spring DD is positioned between a valve rod 22 and tappet BB, a clearance 20 being maintained between the parts. A weight 32 is pivoted at 28 to the sleeve 16 carrying the links. In operation, as the valve carried by the rod 22 reaches its fully open position the weight 32 will swing to the dotted position. As the linkage moves towards the valve closing position the weight 32 will swing downwardly, strike against the wedge 26 and displace it to temporarily increase the clearance between the members 22, BB. Immediately afterwards the spring DD moves the wedge 26 in the reverse direction to adjust the parts to the normal clearance 20. In a modification the valve tappet comprises two parts screwed together and spring biassed to maintain the correct clearance and the inertia member is guided by helical ribs on one of the parts and acts by impact at the end of the valve closing stroke to screw the two parts one into the other. In another modification the valve rocker arm of an internal-combustion engine is mounted on an eccentric around which an annular inertia member is carried.
