Abstract
534,084. Fluxes. ULMER, W. L. Aug. 25, 1939, No. 24555. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1938. [Class 82 (ii)] In the welding, soldering or brazing of metals a vaporized normally liquid halogen compound having a boiling point at normal pressure not exceeding 150‹C, is supplied to the torch flame to act as a flux. Organic halogen compounds containing a single halogen atom such as allyl chloride, propyl bromide, ethyl iodide, butyl chloride and amyl chloride are preferably used. Stannous chloride or boric trichloride are also referred to. The halogen compound may be used in conjunction with a volatile alkyl borate or borate alcohol mixture or methyl borate mixed with a diluent as described in Specification 532,267. In an example, a mixture of methyl borate, methyl alcohol, acetone and the halogen compound, the latter being in the proportion of 5-50 per cent. by volume is referred to. Specification 507,632 also is referred to.
