533,962. Fluoranthene derivatives. SOC. OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN BASLE. Aug. 23, 1939, Nos. 24261, 24262 and 24263. Convention dates, Aug. 27, 1938, Jan. 19, 1939, and Aug. 2,'1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Fluoranthene nitriles are made by reacting a fluoranthene substituted by at least two halogen atoms with cuprous cyanide, or by diazotizing aminofluoranthenes containing at least two amino groups and subjecting the diazo compound to the Sandmeyer reaction. The products may be converted to the corresponding carboxylic acids by hydrolysis with an acid or alkali; and the carboxylic acids may be halogenated, if desired. In examples (1) dicyanofluoranthene is made by heating dibromfluoranthene (made by brominating fluoranthene in nitrobenzene) with cuprous cyanide, (2) the product of example 1 is hydrolyzed by heating with alcoholic potash in an autoclave, (3) the fluoranthenedicarboxylic acid obtained in example (2) is brominated in chlorsulphonic acid with addition of a small quantity of iodine; a dibromo derivative is obtained, (4) tribromofluoranthene (made by brominating dibromfluoranthene in nitrobenzene) is heated with cuprous cyanide and benzyl cyanide, a tricyanofluoranthene is obtained which yields a fluoranthene tricarboxylic acid on saponification with alcoholic potash, and (5) diaminofluoranthene (made by reacting dibromofluoranthene with ammonia) is tetrazotized and treated with cuprous cyanide ; the product is the same as in example (1).
