533,669. Conversion products of indiarubber. UNITED STATES RUBBBER CO. Nov. 10, 1939, No. 29797. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1938. [Class 70] Hardened conversion products of raw or vulcanized indiarubber are produced by heating the rubber to a temperature of from 70‹C. to 170‹C. in the presence of a volatile aliphatic halide such as methyl iodide, ethyl iodide, normal butyl iodide, isobutyl iodide, isoamyl iodide, t-amyl chloride, isopropyl bromide, or, for vulcanized rubber only at elevated temperatures, butyl chloride, isoamyl chloride, and normal propyl bromide. In the case of raw rubber a weak brown or black product, insolable in usual rubber solvents is obtained. Vulcanized rubber is first converted to a thermo-plastic substance resembling vulcanized balata and on continued heating or heating to a higher temperature, to a brittle shellac-like material.
