Abstract

533,528. Power transmission for motors. CHRYSLER CORPORATION. Sept. 7, 1939, Nos. 25231 and 25232. Convention dates Sept. 3, 1938, and May 17, 1939. [Class 80 (ii)] In a power transmission system for driving motor cars the crank-shaft 10 drives the impeller member 14 of a kinetic hydraulic coupling to which it is connected by a supporting journalling member 13 formed with a member 23 which carries an anti-friction ball bearing 24 which provides a support for a hub 20 to which is fixed the runner 16 of the hydraulic coupling. The hub 20 also supports the shrouding 18 of the coupling in fluid-type manner and is attached to the driving-member 30 of a friction clutch which drives the input shaft 11 of a variable speed transmission device C of the motor. The shaft 11 is connected to the driver-disc 33 of the clutch which is controlled by a pressure plate 31 which can be moved against the action of springs 32 to throw-out the clutch by the action of levers 36. The forward end of hub 20 is fitted with roller bearings 26 to support the forward end of the input shaft 11, and the rear end of the shaft 11 is supported by ball bearings 27 carried by the transmission device C. The rear end of the hub 20 is supported by roller bearings 29 on the shaft 11. The ball bearings 24, 27 provide the entire support for the shaft 11 and hub 20 and so allow universal tilting of said shaft and the hub as a unit to compensate for minor misalignment between the driving shaft and transmission. The throw-out mechanism 35 for the clutch is slidable on a sleeve 37 secured by fasteners 38 to the casing of the transmission C. Internally this sleeve is formed with a tapered clearance 39 to permit tilting of the shaft 11, and an oil packing may be fitted in the clearance. The sleeve 37 may be formed with an internal thread 41 of such hand that the rotation of shaft 11 tends to urge oil back towards bearing 27.
