533,427. Hydrocarbons. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. July 4, 1939, No. 19461. Convention date, Nov. 25, 1938. Drawings to, Specification. [Class 2 (iii)] Fuel hydrocarbon mixtures are prepared by reacting isoparaffins with olefines having not more than five carbon atoms or low-molecular weight polymers thereof at a temperature above 10‹F. and in the presence of a metal halide catalyst and of an alkyl halide. Isoparaffins specified are isobutane and isopentane, whilst ethylene, propylene, normal and iso-butylenes and normal and branched amylenes are referred to as olefines, together with polymers and copolymers thereof of low molecular weight; mixtures of hydrocarbons containing isoparaffins and olefines may also be used, e.g. partially dehydrogenated field butanes, and mixtures from catalytic or thermal polyrnerization and cracking units. The isoparaffin is preferably present in considerable molecular excess over the olefine, e.g. between 2 and 12 mols. of isoparaffin per mol. of mono-olefine. Catalysts mentioned are the halides of aluminium, zinc, antimony, tin, iron, nickel, tungsten, tantalum, zirconium, columbium, bismuth, beryllium, molybdenum, vanadium, titanium and thorium : also double salt complexes of aluminium halide and alkali metal halide including those of Specification 534,456. The catalysts may be mounted upon carriers either inert or activated with mineral acids or acid gases; carriers mentioned include silica gel, bauxite, kieselguhr. and the substance known under the Registered Trade Mark " Celite." Of the alkyl halides, mention is made of ethyl chloride, a propyl chloride, tertiary butyl chloride, and secondary or tertiary amyl chloride; the halide is preferably present in an amount between 1 and 15 per cent. of the weight of total feed. When double salt complexes are used as catalyst, high pressure and temperature conditions are employed, e.g. 400‹F. and 3,000 lb. per sq. inch.; otherwise temperatures of 15-80‹F. and atmospheric pressure suffices. The process may be effected continuously or in batches, and in the liquid or gaseous phase. A suitable apparatus is described and a table is given listing the data associated with a number of experiments. Specification 509,463 also is referred to.
