533,069. Length indicator in cutting off mechanism. SWIFT, jun., Inc., G. W. Oct. 5, 1939, No. 27271. Convention date, May 15. [Class 31 (i)] The invention relates to length indicators for use in mechanisms for cutting off blanks of corrugated paper board or the like of predetermined length. In the machine illustrated co-operating knives 1, 2, Fig. 1, of rotary type are interconnected by spur gearing 4, 6. Sheet material 38 is fed past the knives by rollers 37 associated with the cut-off machinery. A length of cut indicating device comprises a rotary arm 50 on the delivery side of the cutters 1, 2 and mounted in brackets 52 slidable lengthwise of the machine. The member 50 is driven in timed relation to the cutters by a splined spindle 54 bevel geared to a shaft 2a. A second bevel gear 60 drives the arm 50 which may carry a small printing die 62 receiving ink from a roller 63. The arm 50 is so co-ordinated with the knife 2 that it marks the web at the same time as the knife cuts. The operator adjusts the brackets to the length required to be cut. If the marks do not coincide with the length of blank cut a servomotor 47 is operated to adjust variable speed transmission for regulating the length of cut. Another servomotor 32 alters variable speed transmission of the cutting speed of the knives to keep the speed of cut substantially equal to the speed of travel of the web. The position of the brackets 52 may be adjusted by a cross-shaft 64, Fig. 3, carrying a gear 65 meshing with a rack 66. A scale 69 is provided. Push buttons may be arranged to operate the servomotors forward or reverse to increase or decrease the cutting speed to the speed of travel of the web. After the machine has been accurately set for one length of blanks, a clutch 79, Fig. 1, may be disconnected so that the brackets 52 may be reset for the next run after push buttons are operated to reset the cutting speed and travel of the web.
