Abstract

531,677. Liquid fuel burners. RUTHERFORD, E. J. Y. Aug. 10, 1939, No. 23105. [Class 75 (i)] Atomized liquid fuel discharged downwardly into a frusto-conical refractory chamber d' is subjected to partial combustion to vaporize the fuel and is then mixed with air entering through a damper-controlled lateral inlet d<SP>2</SP> for complete combustion to take place in a horizontal passage e discharging through a vertical flue f to a cooking-range fitted with a hot-plate b and oven c. The liquid fuel is fed from a tank k through a filter k<SP>1</SP> to a valve controlled nozzle i and is atomized by low-pressure steam discharged from a nozzle j and generated in a flash boiler consisting of a double tube l arranged in the chamber d' and connected to the water tank m. The nozzle j is carried by a separate chamber j<SP>1</SP> clamped by a stirrup q to a head n which supports the flash boiler and is formed with passage h for admitting air to the fop of the chamber d<SP>1</SP>. This air supply through lateral inlets h' is regulated by adjustable washer plates j<SP>3</SP> on the nozzle j. The nozzles i, j are fitted with clearing prickers s, r. A branch o allows compressed air to be supplied to the nozzle j to atomize the fuel at starting, ignition being effected by a burning wick, torch or pan inserted in the bottom of the chamber d<SP>1</SP>. The liquid fuel may alternatively be atomized by air or liquid fuel vapour and its flow may be automatically or thermostatically controlled.
