Abstract
531,256. Ethylene oxide. U.S. INDUSTRIAL ALCOHOL CO. June 23, 1939, No. 18348/41. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 2 (iii)] In the production of ethylene oxide from ethylene and oxygen with an inert diluent in the presence of a catalyst, at 100-450‹ C. in which oxygen is 5-18 per cent. and ethylene 1-10 per cent. by volume, the conditions are arranged to meet one or all of the following criteria : (1) the linear velocity of the gas stream is 20-500 cubic feet per hour per square inch of catalyst cross-section ; or (2) the gas stream is 100-5,000 cubic feet per hour per cubic foot of catalyst ; or (3) the gas stream is 5-150 cubic feet per square foot of catalyst chamber surface in contact with the catalyst. A suitable catalyst is the composite silver catalyst described in Specification 503,052. The mixed gases may be dried by passing through suitable material such as alumina or silica gel or calcium chloride before treatment, and the reaction products may be scrubbed to remove ethylene oxide and then is part returned to act as diluent. A number of examples are given. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 431,966, 434,001, 509,183 and 530,052.
