Abstract

531,083. Inserting sheets into envelopes. ROSE, A. G. and ROSE. BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. June 22, 1939, No. 18153. [Class 94 (i)] A machine for collecting bundles of sheets or " inserts " and inserting them in envelopes comprises means for withdrawing a batch of inserts one from each of a series of magazines and depositing them in superposed relationship to form a bundle on a conveyer, a feeler for detecting a failure to withdraw an insert from a magazine and for causing the rejection of the deficient bundle, and means for removing each bundle from the conveyer and passing it through a guiding-device into an envelope. The inserts are stored in a series of magazines 6 arranged adjacent to an intermittently moving conveyer 7 provided with pushers 11. A pusher stops momentarily adjacent to each magazine, and in this position an insert 17 is withdrawn from each magazine simultaneously and deposited in front of the pusher, by an oscillating suction nozzle 22. A gripper 34, which reciprocates along an horizontal guide 38, grips the insert and draws it to its correct position above the conveyer where a positioning member 39 descends and presses it down on to platform members 12, 13 between guides 18, 19. As each pusher 11 carries the completed bundle away from the last magazine, a member 61 pushes the bundle off the members 12, 13 through a mouthpiece 62 into an open envelope 63. The envelopes are stored in a magazine 102, Fig. 1, and are withdrawn by a suction nozzle and deposited by reciprocating grippers in a conveyer platform 101 arranged transversely to the conveyer 7. The envelope is carried along the conveyer by reciprocating pushers 110 to the mouthpiece 62, and during this movement, the flap of the envelope passes below a guide 137 which deflects it below the mouthpiece 62. A suction nozzle 138 lifts the upper portion of the envelope to open the mouth, whereupon the mouthpiece is moved until it just enters the envelope. The bundle is then pushed through the mouthpiece into the envelope by the member 61. A feeler device, consisting of rollers 151, 152, Fig. 3, closes on each insert as it leaves its magazine 6. If an insert is not withdrawn, the rollers allow contact points to touch and complete the electric circuit of a device that rejects the deficient bundle. A similar device is used in association with the envelope magazine.
