Abstract

530,840. Mercury switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., GIBSON, W. T., and COLE, R. A. L. June 20, 1939, No. 17958. [Class 38 (v)] A mercury switch comprising electrodes C, D or G, H dipping into a mercury globule E or L in an inert-gas filled envelope A or K, is employed to break the supply - circuit to portable X-ray apparatus, if the apparatus is in an incorrect operating position. Thus an X-ray tube and its supply-transformer are arranged in an oil tank the tube being designed to operate horizontally, or vertically upwards or downwards or in any other position, the mercury switch opening the supply if the apparatus is exposed due to the tank not being in the selected position, Fig: 4 (not shown). Where two selected positions are available, two mercury switches, or single switch, suitably modified, may . be provided. The switch may also be used for levelling the apparatus.
