Abstract

530,522. Shock-absorbers. MARTINDALE, A. F. June 10, 1939, No. 17102. [Class 108 (iii)] In an automobile shock absorber the damping is varied automatically by means displaced by a moving part of the shock-absorber this automatic action being under manual control. In the construction shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1 applied to an hydraulic shock-absorber A, B the damping is controlled by a valve C loaded by a spring C<SP>1</SP> seated against a plunger D which bears on a lever D<SP>1</SP> operated by a cam F on the rocker shaft E<SP>1</SP> of the shock-absorber. The upward movement of the plunger D and lever D<SP>1</SP> is controlled by a cam G connected by a spring G<SP>1</SP> to a manually-operated lever G2. If the manual control is altered the spring G<SP>1</SP> is stressed, and when the plunger D is next depressed by the cam F the spring rotates the cam to a new position, so that when the plunger is returned by its spring C<SP>1</SP> it returns only to the new position set by the cam and the manual control. In a modification the manual control acts through a spring on a sliding bolt having two steps either of which can engage the end of the lever D<SP>1</SP> and thus provide two settings for the plunger. The invention is applicable to solidfriction shock-absorbers.
