Abstract

530,412. Centrifugal oil separators. JOHNSON, J. P. June 22, 1939, No. 18266. [Class 23] Oil particles are separated from gas by centrifugal action while the gas stream passes through a chamber where it is made to whirl, first in one direction, then in the other. The apparatus is intended particularly for use on aircraft. The tubular shaped body 11 has cup-shaped ends 12, 13 with inlet and outlet tubes 15, 18. The inner end of the tube 18 projects into the separator and carries a deflector plate 20 with a sharpened edge. The first baffle has an end wall 23 with a cylindrical flange 24, and a corrugated member 25 is arranged between the flange and the wall of the body 11. The flange corrugations are inclined so that the gas stream is forced to whirl as it passes. The second baffle has a wall 29 with a flange 30 and a corrugated member 31 arranged to reverse the direction of the whirl of the gas.. When used on an aeroplane the inlet tube 15 receives discharged oil-laden air under pressure, and this passes through the separator, where it is whirled first in one. direction, then in the other. The oil particles are thrown to the wall by centrifugal force whence they drip to the outlet 35 while the clean gas passes through the outlet tube 18 to de-icer equipment or other apparatus. Any oil deposited on the plate 20 drips easily from its sharpened edge. The outlet 35 is provided with a strainer 40 and a nipple 37 attached to a conduit leading to the oil reservoir. The separator is supported by a bracket 46 so that it slopes downwards to the discharge end.
