[Class 95] A device for moistening gummed surfaces comprises a moistening blade having a liquid conduit therein and a discharge slot of capillary size along the lower surface thereof, a liquid supply having its level normally maintained below the discharge slot both during and after a moistening operation, a downwardly disposed tubular extension on said blade forming a direct passage from the discharge slot to the liquid supply, and means for priming that portion of the blade which is positioned above the normal liquid level. Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 6 illustrate such a device, comprising a blade 20 provided with a conduit 21, a capillary slot 23, and a tubular portion 21b extending into the liquid container 22. The normal liquid level L-L is maintained by a supply bottle 24, and the blade may be primed by rocking the device about the fulcrum 31. A guide plate 41, for an envelope flap, may be provided, and envelopes may be conveyed past the blade, between belts 45, 47, Fig. 2. Fig. 8 shows a modification, in which the blade is primed by turning it, about the pivot 51, into the dotted position, while in the device shown in Fig. 11, the blade is rotated on a longitudinal axis, to become submerged in the liquid, and thereby primed.
