529,996. Resinous condensation products ; hydroxyaryl ketones. ARMOUR & CO. May 31, 1939, No. 16066. Convention date, June 1, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Resinous condensation products are prepared by condensing formaldehyde, its polymers, or substances liberating formaldehyde with a ketone of the general form wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of at least eleven carbon atoms and R<SP>1</SP> is a phenylene or alkyl substituted phenylene radical. The ketones, which may be prepared by condensing a phenol or a substituted phenol with a fatty acid chloride containing at least 12 carbon atoms in the presence of a metallic halide, include hydroxyphenyl heptadecyl, heptadecenyl and undecenyl ketones and methylhydroxyphenyl heptadecyl ketone. In examples formaldehyde or hexamethylenebetramine is condensed with (1) hydroxyphenyl heptadecyl ketone in its presence or absence of phenol, (2) a mixture of o- and p-hydroxyphenyl hepdecenyl ketone, (3) hydroxyphenylundecyl ketone, (4) a mixture obtained by reacting o-, m- and p-cresols with stearyl chloride, (5) a mixture obtained by condensing phenol and acid chlorides obtained from linseed oil fatty acids.
