[Class 70] [Also in Group IV] Rubber substitutes, obtained by polymerizing in the presence of sulphur butadiene 1.3, chloro-2-butadiene 1.3, chloro-2-methyl-3-butadiene, isoprene or dimethyl-2-3-butadiene 1.3, are plasticized by the subsequent addition of a compound of the general formula R-S-R 1 , where R is an alkyl, aryl, thiazyl, thiocarbamyl, xanthogenyl, thioxanthogenyl, aromatic acyl or thioacyl group and R 1 is hydrogen, substituted ammonium, alkali or alkaline earth metal or a group represented by-Sn-R where n is a whole number less than 4 and R has the meaning already set out. Numerous examples are given, the preferred compounds being thiuram sulphides, thiazyl sulphides and mercaptans. Additions may be made of antioxidants such as phenyl-#-naphthyamine, and also of alkaline inorganic substances or amines having dissociation constants above 10<SP>-6</SP>, such as magnesium oxide, trisodium phosphate, sodium carbonate or tetraborate, cadmium oxide, barium carbonate, dibutylamine, piperidine, diaryl granidines, thiocarbanilide, or condensation products of aldehydes with amines or aniline and of aliphatic diamines with aromatic aldehydes. The polymerized products may be formed as described in Specifications 387,363 and 529,839, and other polymerizable organic compounds may be admixed before the polymerization.
